Through various sales, Kettle Foods is today a subsidiary of the Campbell Soup Company, but the term “kettle chip” can be used by any company selling that kind of product. This led to a series of bitter trademark disputes, which ended in 2007 when a judge ruled that kettle chips are a generic name that couldn’t be trademarked.
